If you haven't noticed, Hallyu (also referred to as the Korean Wave) is taking over the world. K-pop bands like BTS and Blackpink are becoming mainstays on the music charts, while K-beauty products are dominating the beauty scene. K-dramas are beginning to take over Netflix, too.

In the past few months, there's been an uptick of K-drama offerings on the streaming site, with quite a handful marked as Netflix Originals (see: Romance Is a Bonus Book, Kingdom, and Memories of the Alhambra). K-dramas are typically 16 to 20 episodes, which make them easier to binge. Their plots are also delightfully bizarre, and run the gamut from "girl meets a hot alien" to "woman with secret superhuman strength works as personal bodyguard." Fabulous, right?

If you, too, want to ride the K-Wave, allow us to introduce you to the essential shows you must watch before you dive deep into the genre. From the deliciously saccharine to the sob-inducing, there's something here for everyone.
